Hi Mark,
That's great news by the sound of it!
It's just that it can get so frustrating using that player usually!
I know that it's not everyone's cup of tea as they say but it's a very
useful service for many of us so far really denied to us scrreenreader
users!
Will let you get on with it now and look forward to more updates soon again.
Thanks for bringing your announcement forward but of course that was not my
intention at all!

Tony,
I was going to announce something on this soon, but in order to respond to
your email, I'll put this out now.
CFIT and RTÉ have agreed to jointly supervise a Digital Media Design
student in working on the accessibility of the RTÉ Player to JAWS users. As
you know, we've been pressing this issue with RTÉ for some time and they
have put some work into trying to make the Player accessible, but these
efforts haven't been very successful. Because RTÉ are very limited in
resources at this time, we've found a better way to do it, by offering it as
a fully supported student project. We have recruited a student who wants to
and is capable of taking on the project. RTÉ are providing access in the RTÉ
Television Centre to the source code of the Player and the development
tools. They have assigned a senior developer to support the student in her
work. CFIT are providing support in accessibility, use of JAWS and user
testing.
The project has just kicked off and I was going to announce it some time
soon because we will be looking for input from the JAWS user community who
will help with testing successive prototypes. I don't know exactly when this
will happen because there's a bit of groundwork to do before then. The
project will be completed in May 2011. This is an ambitious undertaking but
we have a very capable student so I think this is the best way to go and I'm
pleased that RTÉ are providing the level of support necessary. I have faith
that we will be successful in at least making the important functions of the
Player accessible and easy to use.
I'll say more when the project gets to the stage where it requires your
input.
