That's not my understanding.
Anti-Malware include anti virus checking.
If you look at the Wikipedia article for Security Essentials you can see that
it does include anti-virus functionality.
Windows Defender on Windows 7 was just for spyware and didn't include AV
checking.

Why would you want to have two anti virus packages on your system?
In general its not recommended to have two AV packages installed as at best
they will make your pc slow and at worst they will trip over each other and
cause nasty side affects.
Go with whichever you find is easiest to use.
