What antivirus program are you using?  It's possible, as was reported
elsewhere, that an Avast update might be behind this issue - stealing focus
from the main application, as it were.

that was the first thing i thought of, but i did a test deactivating the
mousepad and it still happened.
it is quite unusual because it is intermittent and affects two applications
word and OE.
