Mark,

Another question that you may ask, if it wasn't already, is: is there anything it cannot do that the present main RTÉ Player can do? (We screen-reader users wouldn't necessarily know.) (The BBC iPlayer has some such issues.)

best way to answer that may be to run a side-by-side comparison, between the XL Player - and the main player perhaps without a screen-reader. So far, my experiences with the new player have been quite pleasant - taking into account the need to use the JAWS pass-through key [JAWSKey+3] to enable arrow keys for the functionalities you have mentioned there.

Subject: [vicsireland] Accessible version of RTÉ Player

The address of the accessible version of the RTÉ Player is now www.rte.ie/playerxl/. Anyone using the previous but very similar address www.rte.ie/playerxl/at/ should stop. That was Olivia Kennedy's development version. The improvements have now been added to the standard XL version of the player. This 'XL version' has been developed for non-mouse and large screen TV use and is the one you get through the Sony Playstation, connected TVs, etc. It can be used with JAWS version 9 or above.

I wonder can anyone who has used it with a screen reader please give some feedback. I'd like to get a snapshot right now of what the experience is like for screen reader users (any screen reader, not just JAWS). I'm already aware of three issues:

1. The need to maximise the screen to get rid of the pop-up welcome message. 2. The need to use the JAWS pass-through key before the arrow keys to operate fast forward, rewind and volume up/down. 3. The fact that it's a different version from the one that you get if you go to the RTÉ website and click 'RTÉ Player' (we're working on this).

What other issues are there? Does anything simply not work? Does it work as well with screen readers other than JAWS?

Anything you can say about it will help make the case for prioritising the future work.

Thanks,
Mark
