I have spent a few evenings over the past month making a new splash screen
to potentially replace the current one. I'm quite happy with the results,
but very few things are beyond improvement.
The candidate versions of the image can be found here:

Github will display scaled versions, but viewing each image in a separate
tab makes for easy comparisons at the correct resolution.
The only difference between the versions is the overlay texture (none /
clouds / scratched metal / synth panel). I'm partial to the cloud version
myself.
If you have any suggestions, preferences or general opinions, I'll be glad
to hear them. Should you want to try out some tweaks, adjustments or
overhauls of your own, all of the source material is available in the
repo*. Everything is either made by me and released with cc-by or available
with compatible open licences (see license and attributions).
* Beware the intermediate-to-advanced Inkscape magic used in some of the
svg files. I suggest disabling filters when zooming in.
