You may be right - not that I'd call Yoshimi all that humble - its all
down to what you consider a synthesiser to be - I made my own in
discrete transistors etc but you could still plug a guitar or mike into
a lot of the commercial offerings.
I could theoretically pull out the effects and make an updated
AlsaModularSynth that would differ from Yoshimi slightly in signal
routing only.
I've not been able to dive into the code far enough to get a true handle
on how it works due to 'real' work pressure and kids etc but I have been
assuming that the Systems Effects Send control allows you to send audio
streams from one effect to others. If I could patch in external audio
here then I'd be happy*
If you could do that - and I could work out how to add other effects
(ring modulators etc) then woohoo!
* I dont know if you've listened to a mixing of one source through one
echo unit and keyboard through another echo setup but it can give me the
screaming habdabs with beat frequency effects so its nice to use the
same processing!

Indeed I have, we appear to have some common history. What you're proposing
really does sound like more fun than a machine gun, but I'm baulking at the
work involved - for the same reasons as you :-).

cheers.
