There's two problems with proving that they are discriminating. The first is that it is individuals who have to bring the case against Sky. Yes, someone like the RNIB could do it on our behalf, but do they have the incentive to risk wasting thousands if not millions on fighting a company who have thousands if not millions in reserve to fight such cases. The second problem is that they use the 'reasonable adjustment' vagary. They can show that they are doing something to improve accessibility, so who is going to take them to court to fight for discrimination.

The best thing us humble VI folk can do is to nag their customer services.

Cheers

Barry

Digital exclusion is a real problem, and tbh sky should have put their
millions into development of an accessible box. I remember talking to
them in 2003 about it. it's now 12 years on, and in sky box terms, we
totally blind have got nowhere. You can exclude sky talker, as that's not
viable now, and never was, as the box outstripped the capabilities of the
blindie box attachment even before release. Sky should have invested in
an accessible solution for their boxes from the ground up, and why on
earth they didn't look into adapting the tvonix boxes I will never know,
as the ground work had been done in that case. Sky must have known about
the talking freeview box. Their attention to their blind, non-digital
customers has been woeful tbh. I fear for the non-digital blind person's
access to tv technology, they can only get further and further behind. An
accessible box, from switch on is possible, and sky should be making all
efforts to create one, as accessibility helps
everyone, not just blind people.

Hello all,

I wonder how this will help those viewers not online/those not using apps
on Smartphones? (apparently about a third of all disabled people have
never used the internet, according to Office for National Statistics
figures. The proportion is about the same among people aged 65 to 74 and
far fewer people over 75 have ever been online…that says nothing about
those who have used the internet but struggle).

Best,

Clive

Hi Alison.

Sky Talker is no longer available I’m afraid, it was only ever compatible
with the original Sky and Sky Plus boxes, and since they’ve moved to HD
equipment now for which their is no compatible connection for the Sky
Talker unit itself, Sky decided to sease production. The accessibility
features are now being concentrated on their smartphone apps, on Android
and iOS.

All the best, Ibrahim.

There is also Sky Talker of course, but the voice is so awful! But it is
useful for providing a synopsis, indicating which channel you are on and
whether that programme has audio descripton.

Hi all

Sky have a new level of accessibility for their Sky box and on-screen menu’s.
You can now increase contrast and font size.

Cheers
