Hi Ray, When you go to download a book from audible you specify the file
type (1,2,3 or 4) at that point and once the file is downloaded you have it
in that particular format. So when you transfer it to the device you can
only have it in that format. Mind you I don't think theres anything to stop
you from downloading the same book in different formats.
You have to have the audible manager software on your computer before you
can play or transfer a book.

Subject: [access-uk] Re: Audible questions
The replies to my question about Audible have been very useful, and I'll say
thanks to everyone.
Brian and others have alerted me to the difference between the Audible manager and the actual encoding method used.
I only have one question now, whichis, if you transfer your files to a Book
Currier or maybe a Bookport, can you transfer in any quality and, dafgt as
it may sound to ask, will the files play in the absense of the Audible
Manager? I assume the manager must verify that the files are being
transfered in accordance with the conditions set by Audible, but if someone
would like to spell this out to me, then I'd be very glad.
Thanks again, everyone.

Andy, you are correct. Audible Manager is the player responsible for the downloading of Audible content.
To answer Ray's question specifically, Audible Manager can playback Audible
books which are encoded in any one of four formats, with format one being
the lowest sound quality and obviously format four being the highest.
As Andy says, the files can be burned to regular audio CD but this takes up
a number of CD's.
The files can also be played using an iPod (including the Shuffle), if you transfer the books using iTunes. Anapod Explorer will transfer the books onto a Shuffle in format four only.
The Book Port and Book Courier will playback audible books, as will the pac
mate.

Tristram - by the Audible organiser, do you mean Audible Manager? As far as I know, Audible files will only play on a small number of players in their compressed format, though they can be burned to CD, but this produces loads of discs!

Audible only give the shuffle away with their audible listener programmes,
and I think the commitment is 12 months unless anything has changed
recently.
You should be able to transfer the audible material to any player provided
you have the Audible organiser installed to receive the downloads. The
downloads are normally encoded as MP3.

I wonder if, please, someone would mind clarifying the some questions I have about Audible?
1. Audible is still offering the Ipod Shuffle as a 'give away'. Is this
though tied to a commitment to take out a subscription? If so, for what
period?
2. What players are people using to play these books? I understand a
proprietory codec or system is used to play and transfer these files. I
understand you may be able to transfer your Audible books to two or three
devices. Is this true?
Thanks for any answers to these questions.
