Hi Ray,

Sorry me probably getting my virtualisation and dual boot muddled up there!!

I couldn't agree more re Macs being an option for someone just losing their
sight to consider.

I guess my comments re discussion of Macs being off-topic is influenced by
what would appear to be the level of sniffyness re all things Mac by some
within the access world - no I will probably never be a total Mac evangelist
but I have to say I am getting very very tempted to switch and that's from
someone who has used Windows and Jaws for over 15 years now!!

Do pass on info on that UK list as and when you find it.

Cheers,

Phil

Phil, I know, or am pretty certain, there is a UK-based Mac list, and when I
find out exactly where it is and how to join, II'll let the list know.

Two brief comments: it would be interesting to know how usable Office for
the Mac now is, if its usable at all that is. Gordon has said he's using a
dual boot machine, rather than virtualisation, which of course is doable now
that Macs are Intel based.

I cannot see that the Mac environment and its use is really off topic here.
The more news circulates about this alternative the better, surely.

Lets face it, for someone starting out now, who's losing their site the Mac
must be a very tempting alternative on grounds of cost alone; but then the
Mac would appear to have a lot going for it besides that important
consideration.

Cheers,

Hi Gordon,

I am very, very interested in your experience so far....I have some
questions however which I will ask on list but maybe we need to email or
something separately...

What software are you planning on using for MS Office type applications e.g.
word processing, spreadsheets? I know Macs come with their own word
processors software, have you used this yet and if so how did you get on or
are you planning on using something else?

How are you getting on with Itunes & voiceover - if indeed this is what
you're planning on using - again I know Voiceover access with Itunes has
been greatly improved but wondering what you've discovered so far.

Which software do you think you will still need to use via the windows
virtualisation?

How easy was it to set up the windows virtualisation?

That will do for now, very interested to hear your comments but perhaps
other list members / moderators would rather we did so privately!!
 Thanks,

Phil

Well, here I am returned to the list transmogrified in to a mac user.

It's weird at first but I am picking up the new keystrokes quicker than I
thought I would.
Voiceover is clear, if a little idiosyncratic, Alex (the default voice I am
using at present) sounds a little harassed at times and I worry that I am
putting him under a little too much stress - he is a little asthmatic too!

I still have windows on the dual boot of course but I am using it less each
day.

I am greatly impressed and think this is a move many people could make with
no great trauma (excepting to the bank account of course).
