Hi Ali & all who've contributed to this thread,

Well ok looks like I've come to a decision (hooray you say!) and that's to
not go with Bt but instead to give the new o2 home broadband service a try.

For £10 a month I will be getting freephone 24hr technical support at call
centres based either in leeds or glasgow and an estimated speed of 14mb
download - yes I know this this is just an estimate but they did assure me
that they do a test for the first month and if the speed dips consistently
below this they will refund the difference or allow me to downgrade to the
basic package which is speeds up to 8mb, apparently the house where we'll be
is very close to the main exchange in that area hence the good speed.

anyway we'll see what happens, it is a new service so could find myself
facing some of those early adopter issues but I must say I found them
extremely helpful on the phone and not condescending in any way. so if
you're an o2 pay-monthly customer and interested in switching ISP's then you
might like to take a look via www.o2.co.uk.

Thanks to you all for your input re this will let you know how it al goes as
and when it's all set up.

With thanks,

Phil

Hi Phil,

Might as well put my 2 p worth in here, BT are ok, the customer Service are
based abroad and yes sometimes their English language communication skills
are not great, even less aware from a visually impaired perspective. If you
do decide to go with BT ensure you know the download speed of your line,
they should tell you this prior to deciding which package suits you, I say
this as my line can only handle 3.5 mb yet they happily sold me the up to
8mb package. I do recognise there is no package between the 2 mb and the 8
mb, but still feel it was a bit naughty not to tell me at the time of
ordering. It was quite easy to set up but I did need sighted assistance to
get the numbers from the router to secure the wireless connection. Good
luck!

 Terry,

Thanks for your feedback, I suspected the anti-mob would outweigh the likes
of yourself but well it's good to hear you've had no problems.

many thanks,

Phil

Phil.
I've always been happy with BT as my broadband provider.
The hub manager software should you want to use it is fairly accessible once
you get to know where stuff is and what unlabeled links relate to, and the
hub phone is very usable looking very similar to a standard digital cordless
phone with the 5 well marked and the pick up and hang up buttons large
towards the top of the phone.

Touching wood now, I've never had any down time with them since I started
using the service around 5 years ago.

I get around 4 MB download and 1 MB upload which in the scheme of things is
ok.

regarding there customer service, never had to use them which I guess is a
good thing.

Anyway sorry to the anti BT mob, I'm sure plenty will have other views.

Subject: [access-uk] Bt total broadband - was ISP providers

Hi me again!

Ok think I'm closing in on my search for a new ISP provider! I have decided
not to carry on with Tiscali as I've had real trouble with them over the
past few days trying to speak to someone and getting some straight answers
from them, the worst of which being this morning when I waited a good 10
mins to get through and just as I was being put t through got cut off, I
then retried and got through but was told "due to a systems failure I would
have to ring back tomorrow"...I was not happy!

so of the others I have looked at I am still thinking of the new o2 service
or the Bt total broadband top range option...of all the people I've tired to
speak to today Bt were the most helpful and it was an 0800 number!

so here's the question, what's people's experiences of using Bt broadband
and receiving customer support from them, in particular does anyone out
there use the Broadband talk option and if so how good is it and how
accessible is the phone you get?

I know I know there will be no doubt those of you who love Bt and those of
you who will have thrown a fit at the mere mention of them but would be good
to hear your recommendations positive or negative!

thanks as ever,

Phil
