So, why would a manufacturer demand a run of 50000? It seems to me that a lot of the stock will be out of date before it would sell. If this is so, then it's obviously these manufacturers who are screwing everyone. Let's see if I've got this analogy right. It's like caterers making a thousand times more sandwiches than were needed for a shop, and charging the shop for them all, even though only a fraction of the sandwiches would be sold. The shop would have to put the extra cost on each sandwich in order to pay for the whole order. Still, if I'm starving and the sandwiches cost £200 each, I'll buy one. The argument goes that if you lowered the price more people would buy eventually, this may even be true however you would need fantastic amounts of initial capital outlay to keep you going before you got that money back in for units sold and that may take far longer than any investor would be willing to wait.
