Hi Edward - Yes, you are right, I do want my laptop on the wireless network, but I have a PC too, would that stay hard wired via the ethernet cable to the router? Can I just check for understanding regarding what actual sockets/ports come on the router please? I'm guessing there must be a USB connection from the phone line, plus an ethernet socket out to the computer, is there anything else? Thanks again - Andy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Edward Green" <edward@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, February 24, 2008 9:59 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Creating a network | Hi Andy, | | The switch I mentioned is on the front of your laptop to the left of the | headphone and microphone sockets, assuming you're meaning to set up the | network with your new Pavilion. | | I can't remember whether you need to attach the router to the phoneline | beforehand, can't see that it would hurt though. One thing I should have | mentioned is that the router is likely to come with a power supply which you | will obviously need to connect. | | Yes, your modem and router is an all-in-one. | | Edward | | -----Original Message----- | From: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of | Andy Collins | Sent: 24 February 2008 21:55 | To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx | Subject: [access-uk] Re: Creating a network | | Edward - | | This is great, can I ask some more? | | So, I use an ethernet cable to connect the pc to a router,, and the router | has a wireless slider switch which pushes to the right after the ethernet | cable is disconnected right? I'm wondering where is the modem? Are these | netgear things both routers and modems in one these days? If not, and I need | | a separate modem, then how does it connect to the router, and does it also | have to be plugged in to the phone socket when setting up the wireless | connection in the first place. | | I really apreciated your clear explanation in your first email, it's the | kind of detail description that really helps me - | | Andy | ----- Original Message ----- | From: "Edward Green" <edward@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> | To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> | Sent: Sunday, February 24, 2008 9:41 PM | Subject: [access-uk] Re: Creating a network | | || Hi Andy, || || You'll need to buy a wireless router. I have a Netgear which works well. || However, be sure it is wireless (the shop sold me the wrong router at | first, || even though I bought it with the laptop and explained exactly what I || wanted)! || || You will receive a cd with the necessary software to install. || || In order to set up the network, you have to use the Ethernet cable to || connect the router to the computer. You will also need to log into a || webpage to set up your router, don't worry, you won't need to be on the || internet. || || I think the installation wizard will take you directly to that page once || you've gone through the installation process, but if not the address will | be || something like www.routerlogin.net || || The username is normally something like admin, the password might be | either || admin or password. || || The actual setup should be fairly straightforward, I would recommend || enabling security when asked, which means you will be required to choose a || pass phrase. || || When you've set up the router, unplug the Ethernet cable from your PC. If || your wireless switch is pushed to the right, the computer should detect | the || new network. You'll be required to enter the pass phrase you just chose | and || you should be away. || || Hope this helps, || || Edward || || -----Original Message----- || From: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf | Of || Andy Collins || Sent: 24 February 2008 21:19 || To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx || Subject: [access-uk] Creating a network || || Hi all - || || I'm ready to set up a wireless network now, but have little idea what to | buy || || to achieve it. || || Can some kind soul suggest/recommend and explain what to do, with suitable || hardware. || || I need to know how it all connects, so please, be big on detail for me, it || really will help. || || Thanks - || || Andy || || || || -- || Internal Virus Database is out-of-date. || Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. || Version: 7.0.289 / Virus Database: 265.0.0 - Release Date: 11/8/2004 || || ** To leave the list, click on the immediately-following link:- || ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=unsubscribe] || ** If this link doesn't work then send a message to: || ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx || ** and in the Subject line type || ** unsubscribe || ** For other list commands such as vacation mode, click on the || ** immediately-following link:- || ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=faq] || ** or send a message, to || ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the Subject:- faq || || || __________ NOD32 2898 (20080223) Information __________ || || This message was checked by NOD32 antivirus system. || http://www.eset.com || || || ** To leave the list, click on the immediately-following link:- || ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=unsubscribe] || ** If this link doesn't work then send a message to: || ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx || ** and in the Subject line type || ** unsubscribe || ** For other list commands such as vacation mode, click on the || ** immediately-following link:- || ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=faq] || ** or send a message, to || ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the Subject:- faq || || || -- || This email has been verified as Virus free. || Virus Protection and more available at http://www.plus.net || || || -- || Internal Virus Database is out-of-date. || Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. || Version: 7.0.289 / Virus Database: 265.0.0 - Release Date: 11/8/2004 || || | | | | -- | Internal Virus Database is out-of-date. | Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. | Version: 7.0.289 / Virus Database: 265.0.0 - Release Date: 11/8/2004 | | ** To leave the list, click on the immediately-following link:- | ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=unsubscribe] | ** If this link doesn't work then send a message to: | ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx | ** and in the Subject line type | ** unsubscribe | ** For other list commands such as vacation mode, click on the | ** immediately-following link:- | ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=faq] | ** or send a message, to | ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the Subject:- faq | | | __________ NOD32 2898 (20080223) Information __________ | | This message was checked by NOD32 antivirus system. | http://www.eset.com | | | ** To leave the list, click on the immediately-following link:- | ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=unsubscribe] | ** If this link doesn't work then send a message to: | ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx | ** and in the Subject line type | ** unsubscribe | ** For other list commands such as vacation mode, click on the | ** immediately-following link:- | ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=faq] | ** or send a message, to | ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the Subject:- faq | | | -- | This email has been verified as Virus free. | Virus Protection and more available at http://www.plus.net | | | -- | Internal Virus Database is out-of-date. | Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. | Version: 7.0.289 / Virus Database: 265.0.0 - Release Date: 11/8/2004 | | -- Internal Virus Database is out-of-date.
