My Linio came already bundled with a high quality leather case with a belt clip similar to the Executive one that you can buy as an extra for the Victor Reader Stream anyway so unless things have changed I do not believe you need to shell out for an extra case with the Plextalk models.
In actual fact I personally find the leather case for the Plextalk if anything a little too robust and a bit of overkill and end up cutting off the belt clip and also trimming away some of the leather from the front to improve the access to the keypad. You may be horrified by this approach and many will want to keep the pristine leather cover in its entirety but even after doing this trimming there is lots of protection ,you can still rely on the leather flip cover to provide protection for all the keypad area. I then use a lanyard and the Plextalk pretty much stays around my neck all day, as you say operating as a clock, internet radio, daisy player, podcast downloader and player and so on. If you purchase the Plextalk I recommend you become familiar with the menu shortcut feature. This make the device very easy to use. Whilst you say you are not interested in the internet capabilities the Podcast feature is especially good and I use it a lot on the Linio or first gen Pocket now. Unlike the Stream you do need to manage your subscriptions on a PC or Mac and not the device but once this is done it is very smooth So basically I can for example update a podcast episode feed and download all outstanding episodes of a Podcast with a key-press even whilst doing something else like the washing up.
Similarly I use a shortcut to delete podcast episodes, book titles, files etc.
The Victor Reader Stream has more inbuilt shortcut set up for you but on the Plextalk. you need to set up and customize the ones you want. This gives more flexibility but requires a little more setting up. This is easy though, just navigate to the feature you want in the menu system and just hold the menu key down with the keypad key of your choice until the device announces the shortcut has been set. So I have set up menu 2 as my shortcut key to change TTS voice, , 5 deletes a book, 6 deletes a file and so on.

Thank you David. I was looking towards the Plextalk, as I have had the ptn1 and ptx1 as recent daisy players, your comments have probably swayed me, as I too use my ptx1 using sleep modes, and will use my mp3 player possibly as an alarm when out etc. I will see if I can get a case for this product, as my last product, the milestone, came with a carry case which kept it pristine. I like the sound quality of the Plextalk products, and am not really worried about internet radio streams, though wireless connectivity so I can dump things from my pc to my player without connecting it sounds great too. -----Original Message----- From: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of David Griffith Sent: 15 February 2015 22:33 To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [access-uk] Re: FW: recommendations new gen victor reader stream or plextalk pocket daisy player? I personally still prefer the Plextalk Devices but whether they are worth the extra money depends on whether the sound quality / volume is an issue for you or not. If you are hearing impaired and/or sound quality is important for you there is no contest. It has to be the Plextalk of either generation. If you are not hearing impaired or do not need the Superior recording and daisy editing features of the Plextalk the Stream may be a better budget device. The linio also offers Calender and alarm facilities but again this may not be enough to justify the extra cost. I agree only partly with Jackie's comment. I agree that the Plextalk takes longer to boot up from cold compared to the Stream but thereafter consider the power management superior and much more convenient on the Plextalk. I basically never really turn my Plextalk off unless it crashes which is extremely rare. In actual use my Plextalk is left on for days. I even leave it on during its daily charge. This means that in practice with its instant waking from standbys I find it far more convenient compared to the Stream which will beep and power off after about I stink 10 minutes of use, requiring you to reboot the device potentially many times a day. In contrast I only have to press a button on my Plextalk and with the first press it will announce the time and with the second press start playing instantly. I find this surprisingly convenient. So for example I often go to sleep with the sleep feature of the Plextalk and during the night or in the morning I can fumble an earphone into my ear and it will discretely and instantly tell me the time through the earphone without disturbing my wife. This is as far as I am aware impossible with the Stream unless it is left plugged in and charging. However as we have seen the future of the Plextalk devices as internet radio devices is far from assured and it seems likely that the Stream with it ability to upgrade streams within o tunes may be more future proof. It is difficult to be certain about this as so far there is nothing that I can get on my Victor Reader Stream that I cannot get on the Plextalk Devices. It may be that the future for internet radio on both devices is bleak, it is difficult to be sure. I read books at fairly high speeds, play Audible content on it, and can listen to Internet radio or podcasts if I want to. The keys are nice and friendly, battery life is good, and I bought the leather case for added protection. My only criticism, and it isn't that big a deal, is that when it reaches a certain volume, you get this stupid message about not listening to it at high volume. I am told the US firmware does not contend with that aggro, and goes louder anyway. All in all, a great little gizmo. I prefer it over the Plextalk or Linio because the Plextalk takes longer to boot up if not in stand-by mode. It has a much superior recording quality to the Victor as well. Hi all.I am looking for recommendations on which playter to get.One is more expencive than the other, but the functions seem to besimilar. It seems from the rnib website, it seems the Plextalk Pocket DAISY player comes with no case, the victor reader stream comes with siliconone.I play usb dasy, sd card daisy and audible content mostly. Both players can play usb sticks and sd cards.Basically after the demise of my ptx1 and milestone, I want one player to rule them all. I am using usb sticks from RNIB now, and any daisy discs I buy will be transferred to pc then to stick or sd card.Any thoughts pro or against each player?
