Just my two cents worth, personally I use a Nokia E72 smartphone connected
to external Bluetooth Qstarz BT-Q818 GPS receiver. I find that this gives
me just about door-to-door accuracy, with Nokia's Ovi Maps as the mapping
solution.
I find that this has two advantages in day-to-day use. As the Nokia is not
my primary phone, it gives me a secondary device in the event of failure.
Also, the Nokia has a significantly longer battery life than, for example,
the iPhone, at about 12 hours, with the receiver having a battery life of 42
hours. In addition, although there is a small outlay for the equipment, the
maps themselves are free, and also provide many of the local search features
that are also found in commercial software.
This is not everyone's cup of tea, as there does seem to be a culture
towards having all in one devices. However, since I started using this
setup in February, it has yet to leave me astray even once.
I am more than happy to provide additional information or my experiences on
the above if you're interested, however even if not, it is another
mainstream solution for pedestrian navigation that caters to the needs of
the visually impaired which should not be ruled out.

Hi,
What do people think is the best GPS solution for a blind pedestrian these
days?
I've never seen anything sufficiently accurate that I could rely on, but
there must be something out there.
I've been thinking about the Trekker Breeze, but wondered if there was
anything better; would consider getting and iPhone if that was a runner, as
it would be cheaper than the Breeze, which seems to be just under £600 with
the new postcode support once it's available.
