Hi Catherine,

I'm not an SPSS user, but I have had to get JAWS working with it in the past for a student.

What I can tell you is that versions of SPSS newer than 14 have moved to a Java based GUI, and that this has created problems for screen-readers. You're correct, a user had written JAWS scripts for SPSS 14, but these don't work with newer versions.

Someone at SPSS support told me that SPSS version 17 (which is actually called 'PSAW Statistics 17') was tested with JAWS 8, and it did work, but that the functionality was fairly basic.

I did find a limited workaround to get JAWS 10 to work with 'SPSS 17'. It's a bit technical, but if you follow the instructions exactly it should be painless. Basically, you need to install and configure the Java Access Bridge:

Download: http://java.sun.com/javase/technologies/accessibility/accessbridge/index.jsp

Instructions: https://docs.rice.edu/confluence/display/ITTUT/Screen+reading+software+(JAWS)+for+SPSS+set+up+instructions

After installing you should find that JAWS now reads menus and data in tables within SPSS. Moreover, it should even read some stuff in variable view, which apparently older version of SPSS wouldn't allow JAWS to do.

Hope this helps,

Andrew
