  Hi Margaret.

  Hi James.

Sounds very strange. What sort of book are you trying to scan? If it's a
"mass market" paperback then you might need to adjust the brightness setting
every so often, as according to the manual the ink density can vary from page
to page and this can have an effect on scanning.

I am currently scanning a standard hard-backed book from the library. I
suppose even with such books, ink density can vary.

Also don't forget the "scanner optimisation" tool, it's very useful and a
great excuse for going and making a cup of tea.

James, I never ever need an excuse to stop even the most important task for a
good cuppa, but what is this scanner optimization tool, what does it do, and
how do I use it? As for the error with the voices, when exactly does the
error occur? Is it as soon as you enter the Voices section of the settings?

Yes. I have now uninstalled Via Voice totally, and Tristram from Sight &
Sound advised me to get rid of ssil.exe, so I will try again, only using
elequence.

I hope you don't mind the way I have replied to your very kind message. I
normally just remember the salient facts and respond, but in this instance I
thought it might make more sense if I answered each point as it was raised. I
will give it another go, and hope for the best. Do you have any info about
Omnipage? I may even be tempted to buy it, if I can find out which version is
the most user-friendly with JAWS 7 or Window-Eyes 5.5.

Are you still doing your course abroad? If so, I hope it is all going wel
for you.

Thank you very much for your help.

  All the best.

  Marg.
