Hi.

I have some interesting news. it turns out that the model that handtec are stocking is not the official UK model. its the import from the middle east. this means that it hasn't got an 8MP camera on it. KNFB warned me as soon as I ran it that my camera wasn't up to the task, but I went a head anyway. It read the RNIB products catalog reasonably. Obviously there were errors in part, but for the most part I was able to tell which page I was on, what the products were etc. I then scanned my computer screen to see what was going on. Again although it mangled certain words, for the most part it read the email i'm typing out fine. so although its a 3MP camera, it may not be a show stopper. i'd recommend decent lighting conditions however. If anyone can find a website stocking the UK model and post it, that would be great. the OCR results are reasonable so even if you can't find the UK model, this one should do the trick. it depends how serious you are about scanning, obviously if you spend your time reading books regularly then i'd go hunting for a phone with a higher quality camera. but for every day use i'd say this is adequate. whenever i've used an OCR app on any device, results are mixed as it depends on positioning etc. as i'm new to KNFB, the errors could be to do with the way i'm holding the phone.

cheers,

Mo.

Hi Mo,
That would be brilliant. Once I know KNFB works, then I'll probably go ahead and buy one as I still have a hankering for physical buttons! I've got used to touch screens over the last three years but there are still some situations such as trying to dial a phone number in a noisy environment where a physical keypad would be preferable. I'll look forward to your report on KNFB, and thanks for that.

Cheers,
Sandra.
