Thanks Sandra. I would like to believe that the firewall is not involved. Certainly there must be something else rather strange going on, but it seems odd that temporarily unloading it invariably causes normal POP3 mail collection to be resumed. I wondered whether some other process was going on in the background and taking so much of the available resources that the connection to the POP3 server timed out, but I cannot see why this would only occur when the firewall was running. I would like to find out whether the same problem arises if using the XP firewall, but I suspect that even if Webroot Desktop firewall did not load at start up the XP one would be disabled. The only way would be to temporarily uninstall the Webroot one. I will let you know if I find a solution. I intend tomorrow to try A Google search for the error message - unless anyone comes up with an explanation in the meantime.
