Sandra and anyone else interested in this thread. A Google search turned
up a very similar problem reported by another user of Pegasus Mail but
with a firewall other than Webroot Desk Top firewall. Many suggestions
were made particularly centred around Winsoc issues, but the eventual
solution turned out to be that Zone Alarm had been briefly tried before
being uninstalled and replaced by another firewall. The uninstall had left
behind a file which sometimes ran and monitored internet traffic and
interfered with the POP3 and SMTP processes. The person concerned re-
installed Zone Alarm, uninstalled it again, checked that the offending file
had actually gone, - no future connection problems!

I have never had Zone Alarm on this machine, but I used Sygate for a long
time and also tried Kerio briefly. I suspect that remnants of them may be
the cause of my problem. At least I feel confident that Webroot Desktop
Firewall is not directly involved nor Pegasus Mail.
