Clive this sounds like a hardware fault.
Try this list of troubleshooting steps I can think of and report back.
Can you or have you tryed another USB cable?
Does the unit get unusually hot before the USB connection is lost?
Does the drive totally power down or is the USB connection simply lost?
Have you tryed the drive in several other USB ports on the same machine?

Hello listers,
I have just purchased a BabyMatrix 40GB USB hard drive and trying to connect it to my Toshiba Satellite A60 laptop. It comes with a driver CD but as I am running Windows XP Home this is not necessary. I connect the drive to my USB port but it isn't showing and after a few seconds the USB connection shuts down. does anyone on the list have one of these drives? As it is a new drive I have to partition and format it. Any help most welcome.
Best wishes,
Clive Pallett
