Adrian, I'm sure most shops and banks will make sure you can get to the chip-and-pin pad. They aren't fixed, and can be taken off the stand - they're on a sort of telephone cable, and could be handed to you. I often need to get shop staff to tell me where the card slot is, and tell me which way round or which way up to put the card. This must be all routine to them, and I don't worry much about it. Have a good holiday, which I'm sure you will.

H Eleanor Sorry to confuse you but I live in France. I am relaxed but for me this is a complete new experience as I have never had a proper independent holiday on my own, I have always had respite which is different as I have had carers with me 24/7 but I am going to a hotel and I have never been before so I am completely new to this. I will have to kind of fend for myself but for the extra hours I am paying for people to take me out. I am in the hotel on my own, although it is a hotel for the blind run by vision hotels, there is a limit as to how much they can do for me. You are saying that it is not all that easy where you live re you getting to the machine but then you say you are coming to the UK for the 2 weeks. I am fairly certain now that most shops in the UK will now be able to accommodate your inelastic arms and will be most accommodating of your difficulties. If in any form of doubt, I would in your situation simply ask if a Manager could assist me with the payment. Yes of course you can trust your Mum, as you say where would you be without her. I think going on a holiday, a new experience brings anxieties but try to relax a little about it and I am sure you will do just fine. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Adrien Collins" <adriencollins22160@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, July 11, 2012 8:11 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Questions about chip and pinHi Eleanor Ok yes I have the dexterity as you put it to put my pinnumber in butnot all shops particularly over here have facilities forwheelchairs, here disability isn't as far forward as it is in the ukbut even whenI lived in the UK I occasionally came across occasionswhen I found itdifficult to get close enough to the part where the keypadwas so Ifound it difficult to enter my own pin numbers, I don'thave elasticarms. Hence I have always had chip and sign cards in theuk but asthey don't do that here, I have no option than to havesomeone helpme. No I hope the people who will be helping me don't takemy moneybut surely even you would know that you can never be toocareful inthis day and age. I only give my pin number to people I trust and know, if Ican't trustmum, who can you trust? I will assess the situation when Iget to theuk, my bank apparently is closing branches down so itisn't so easyfor me just to go into a branch but I would think underthe currentfinancial climate and with banks buying one another out, there isn'tthe need for so many branches. How ever that doesn'treally help me. Iwould have to go into a branch and draw cash out. as I said, I will see how it works. I am coming to the ukfor twoweeks but am still going to need some cash. If you have the dexterityto put itin yourself, then surely the shops where you makepurchases can bringthe machine to your level, also there are sides on it topreventpeople from looking at your number. I would have hopedthat thesehelper strangers would not be out to take your money.Failing that, wherever you are going on holiday, maybe you can havetraveller'scheques or take money out from the post office as andwhen, thoughthat could be very awkward as one often makes aspontaneous purchase.Eleanor ----- Original Message ----- From: "Adrien Collins" <adriencollins22160@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: "'access uk'" <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, July 11, 2012 5:06 PM Subject: [access-uk] Questions about chip and pinHi I am going on holiday next fortnight, I will be withcarers,I will obviously need money and will have to pay forthingsin shops, I am in a wheelchair and normally get help frommum whogoes with me but I will be with strangers, what is thebest way touse the chip and pin in shops and banks?MYBANKS cards used to be chip and sign.
