Hi Ray and steve

I have got it working with JAWS on Xp Pro with 512MB of ram, there is a delay of about three quarters of a second between each key press and the spoken output, which decreases if you use a faster speech rate. To use the Daniel voice with JAWS, the procedure is a bit complicated. First you need to set your synthesiser to "Sapi 5" either using the Control +insert +S "Select a synthesiser" Dialogue box or by selecting "Change synthesiser" from the Language menu. Then you need to go back into the language menu and select "english (United Kingdom)". Then, if it still isn't using the Daniel voice, you need to go into "Voices" and select "Global", then choose Daniel (it will be called something a bit strange like Scansoft_daniel_full_22khz) from the list of available speakers in the "Person" dropdown box. even Dorothy's journey to the Emerald City wasn't quite that complicated. I'm afraid all this is a legacy of the era of hardware speech, and is quite difficult to get your head around. They'd be better off presenting the engines and speakers in a tree view as Text Aloud and Window Eyes do. Also I have found JAWS to be quite flakey with SAPI synthesisers such as Daniel in general, although it has improved slightly with later versions. Sometimes they just don't work or behave strangely for no apparent reason the moment you send any text to them, and when that happens there's not a lot you can do about it. I'd use text Aloud if I were you, that way you can use Daniel for reading (which is what it was designed for anyway), and still have your normal screen reader speech for typing and navigating through Windows.

Hi Ray,

It should work with JAWS, though I have never tried it. When you try it
Ray, do you get an error, or does it simply not work?

Hi Ali,
I have Daniel but it doesn't seem to work with Jaws. Whether it's because
Daniel is by Sansoft and not AT&T; maybe Steve Nutt can throw some light on
the situation?

When you purchase Text Aloud you will need to add Daniel as an extra.

Best wishes,

Ray

Thanks Steve.

Does Daniel voice comes part of Text Aloud, or, do I need to buy it
separately?

Thank you.

Hi Ali,

You can buy it from http://www.nextup.com. However, if you don't have a
copy of Text Aloud, I think you would have to buy it, as Daniel only comes
if you have one of the Nextup products, but I highly recommend Text Aloud.
We make audio versions of RNIB mags such as Access IT with it, then we can
listen to them round the house, while we are doing things. We use Daniel
for this, and it is great.

You will be able to use it with JAWS, but I have a feeling that it will be

a
bit sluggish, unless you have a beast of a machine, since JAWS is a
resource
hog already, so adding a voice like Daniel, might just make it keel over.
I
have never tried it twith JAWS though. It works with Window-Eyes, albeit
a
bit sluggish on that too.
