You should be OK doing that. When you start the search facility, you usually
get 3 fields to use. The first is the file spec, such as *.pdf, the second
is text you want to find in the files and the third is the folder to search.
Somehow yours must have got stuck at c:\ or similar. That would search the
whole drive, but by default, I find mine shows the folder I'm looking at,
the same as the one shown in the address bar.

On ME, I used to navigate to that folder using My Computer, then press control f; then in the file name field typed *.pdf. But it seems different in Windows XP - I navigated to the folder, pressed control f; then pressed space on the documents button; typed *.pdf and it searched the whole drive.
