I have the baby Tascam US-122 which is completely powered from USB 1.1 bus
so I don't know the bigger model that well. However I would first find out
exactly what power requirements it has first before doing anything. Not all
line wart or wall wart supplies do DC power, most often they do but it is
not universally the case and trying to put a DC current accross something
that is expecting AC power will blow it up.

Assuming you have a DC powered unit and you know what it's current draw is
going to be you may be able to do some caclculations and wire up something
that will do the job using batteries and the kind of parts you get from
Maplin to create your DC voltage. However the real enemy of recording
sessions is the way rechargeables tend to tail off quite quickly on
discharge cycles. Obviously if batteries go flat on the Tascam you will
loose your audio, this process would be hastened if using capacitor
microphones phantom powered off your Tascam.

Depending on how serious you are and whether you are going to be very far
from power you might want to think about some kind of portable power supply
for both laptop and Tascam unit.

Regards.

Subject: [access-uk] Tascam US428 on battery?

hello list,
has anyone tried running a Tascam US428 audio interface from batteries? in
theory this should be easy, as it runs from an external transformer which
should be able to be substituted easily with a battery box supplying the
correct voltage.
what I am not sure of however, is the affect on both the unit and the
laptop to which it would be connected when the batteries started going.
I am using this setup as a portable audio work station, and would find it
really handy when mains power is not available if the tascam could run on
batteries as well as the laptop.

Simon
