Silly thought perhaps, but is this a system with USB ports front and
back?  And might you be using the front ones to try the drive out?

If so, try one of the back ones.

Hi George - It is a desk-top, about 5 years old, it came with XP
installed, 
so I wouldn't have thought the USB connectivity should be a problem,
not 
being desperately ancient! I did try a portable drive of my own on his

machine, and it produced the same problem.
