Hi Tristram.

I'm going to upgrade from JAWS 8 Pro to 9, so I'm pleased to hear that I would not experience problems re access.

My Soundblaster external card is a few years old, so perhaps I'd need to upgrade to a VISTA ready Creative card. I'm sure there is such a creature. Perhaps the Soundblaster Platinum with it's optic in and out will have the appropriate drivers.

No problems upgrading Easy CD or Nero as both are relatively inexpensive.

However, I don't use the Media Player. I prefer Winamp and I use GoldWave for recording audio material. Do you know if these would work with VISTA?

Best wishes.

Andy.

I think the crucial queston would be does it work with your existing
software that you are presently happy with or would you need to upgrade
it. JAWS 9.0 itself works fine on VISTA and reads the interface without
any extensive modifications a la JAWS 4.02 under the original XP Home.
You may need to upgrade the CD writing package though as usually the
earlier versions will not function properly under VISTA.

Likewise any hardware you are going to attach must have VISTA drivers so
you may need to research that to be sure that your transition to VISTA
is not an unpleasant one. The VISTA upgrade advisor software can help
with this.

This will be one of those judgement things but if it looks like you
would have to update a lot of software or hardware then you might
consider going to Media Centre or XP Home route. I think any XP with
service pack three when it is released willl be pretty solid and will be
a workable solution for the time being if you really needed it to be.
However going the XP route does mean that if you choose to upgrade
software in the future you may come up against issues in the future for
which there will be no forthcoming fix, or the otherway around the
software you intend to use is less functional on XP or Media Centre than
on VISTA in some important way.

I agree with Jackie's narrative that VISTA can be a reasonably easy
going housemate. The trick is not to expect it to deal with antiquated
hardware or software and be prepared to take it on its merrits and
forgive it for not be like your old friend XP.

Regards.

Subject: [access-uk] VISTA Re-Visited

Hi all.

I'm getting very closed to having to make a decision on a new computer
and
again, I am presented with a dilemma . Which OS to get!.

I just love XP Home but believe that this is not going to be supported
after
2008, so I need to choose between VISTA, or XP Media Center computers.

I have JAWS Professional version 8 and intend to upgrade to version 9,
so
neither should present too many access issues for me.

I like Packard Bell computers and indeed, have purchased three of them
in
the past. I've been told that Hewlett Packard is another good brand, so

I'll probably go for either of these.

I use my computer, quite a lot for recording BBC Radio Scotland and BBC
Radio 2 shows as well as burning this material, using either Easy CD
creator
or Nero onto CD or DVD's . I also like to use a SoundBlaster External
Sound
Card, to attach my computer to an AV unit. Other items, such as the
Zoom
Recorder and Olympus DS50 as well as External Hard Drives, are all
regular
visitors to my computer.

I have been told that VISTA will not allow me to use many of these
items, so
if this is the case, then I'll go for the Media Center operating system.

Can anyone please let me know if any of my above tasks would be limited
or
prohibited by VISTA please.

Still very much seeking a recommendation from more experienced users
into
brand and type of computer.

Looking forward to a full in-box, hahaha.

Andy.
