Hi Eleanor,

I disagree about memorising the letters. They are actually written down in
the Talks manual. Too many people expect training to be a replacement for
reading manuals. The Talks manual is pretty good I would say, and a little
investment in time with Talks goes a long way.

Just as an added bonus, here are the letters for those who wish to memorise
them:-

2 - A B C
3 - D E F
4 - G H I
5 - J K L
6 - M N O
7 - P Q R S
8 - T U V
9 - W X Y Z

Another way to remember them is that all the numbers, except 7 and 9, have
three letters attached to them, 7 and 9 have four.

Finally, what's wrong with a little social interatction? Whatever your
education level, you should be able to ask any sighted friends for help with
a mobile phone. Most of what Talks does is pretty automatic, so not many
commands absolutely need to be learned. It would pay to learn them, but it
is not essential. Of course, if you don't have sighted friends, that's
another problem in itself. But when I started with Talks, I had lots of
help from sighted people as well as trying things on my own as Barbara said.
And there were no free lists about when I started for Talks.

All the best

Steve

I do not agree with all you say Barbra. Again I am not being patronizing in

any way but I have friends who are visually impaired, people I made friends
with a very young age through boarding school and people who never went on
to have any academic qualifications either because they had educational
needs in adition to visual impairment or because of the time (1960s) where a

poor quality of education was offered (particularly in southern Ireland) to
visually impaired girls. Often some such people need a little more than
playhing around with it themselves. Some people I know just won't touch one
because they perceive it as too difficult. Now as for sighted people and
mobile phones, then this is not the forum for discussion I know but there is

the visual prompt of the letters on each key and forgive me but a blind
person has to memorise this. I have a brother who is sighted and a teacher
but is considerably more slow at writing text messages than myself now and
would not even consider predictive text.
