Hi Carol,

The R-1 is a bit of a battery hog, so the R-9 may well have the same trait.
But I solved this by getting high energy MahaEnergy batteries, and we can
get six hours' recording from one charge now on the R-1.

The R-1 is OK to access, but there is no real confirmation that you are
recording, as you could be in pause mode and still monitoring. But this is
also somewhat true of minidisc, except with minidisc, you can hear motors.
The R-1 has no moving parts, so nothing to hear. But it is all do-able.
What I do love about the R-1, is the thumb wheel manual recording level
adjuster. It is easy to set if you are blind.

I also love the built-in mics, I have never ever heard built-in mics so good
in my life. And because there are no moving parts, there is no motor noise,
usually associated with built-in mic recording.

Finally, you can hear an excellent review of the Edirol, done by Rob
Meredith of APH, at http://www.blindcooltech.com. Go have a serious listen,
as Rob spends quite a bit of time on it, and even records the review on the
R-1 itself. You should be able to go to the home page at Blindcooltech, and
just search for the word Edirol on that page, then download it.

All the best

I'm looking at this quite seriously and wondering what differences, apart
from the storage facility, there are on the two machines. I understand the
R-9 is smaller and only takes two batteries. Anyone gathered more than this
and perhaps someone who has already worked with or seen the R-1 which I
haven't?
