Yes, I can see that it has advantages for cassette recordings especially if you have two sound cards so that you can use some of these features. The phrase editing etc certainly looked interesting so I may play with the demo. Thanks.

Hi Carol,

No, it is not my number one sound editor, simply because it doesn't have
effective noise reduction, and a few other features like that. But it does
have some interesting features that no other sound editor has, like dropping
index tones, and my favourite feature, is that you can set what is called
the record bell. If you are recording and you want to know when you have
reached, say, 40 minutes, to tell your listeners to turn over the tape, then
you can have the record bell play at 40 minutes, or however many minutes you
want, and it gives you a chance to bring the recording to a halt in a
sensible place. The bell is not recorded either.

If you like playing music or singing and recording it, it also has a
metronome. So while it is not as good as Sound Forge at music editing in
the way of noise reduction and such, it does have some interesting features.
Oh yes, and moving in a sound file by phrase is an interesting feature, even
if it is not a Daisy file. You can even tell it the length of pauses that
will govern a phrase ending. It is truly a fascinating program and one I
use as much as Sound Forge, but not instead of.

Well, Steve, you've got me curious now so I took quite a long look at the
documentation. It seems to be a bit like GoldWave with some interesting
additions. I know you used to be a Sound Forge man, so why do you like this
one? Is it your No 1 sound editor and, if so, why!

Sorry about the questions. I just know I like the best too so want to know
what that is from a user perspective.

Thanks for any additional information.

Hi Carol,

Yes, it does work with JAWS with no scripts. It is written from the
ground
up, by a blind person, to be accessible for us. In that respect, you
could
do worse, as it is a bit more accessible than Goldwave.

Does it work with JAWS or need scripts written, does anyone know? I'm not
really thinking of swapping from GoldWave which I find adequate for my
needs
but am interested.

Hi Andy,

Sound Forge is £199.00, and I am not sure of the price of Studio
Recorder,
but you can buy it from http://www.aph.org. For anyone doing speech
recordings and record to cassette as well, I highly recommend Studio
Recorder. It can even drop index tones that can be heard on a cassette
when
queuing and reviewing.

Hi Andy,

No, you can't. But I wouldn't do that anyway, I just use it for
capturing
sound, then I edit on the PC. Sound Forge or Studio Recorder are much
better options for editing.

Steve -

Can you edit recordings on the Edirol, as with the PTR1?

Hi Ray,

No, I am not going to be dismissive about the PTR2, I think Plextalk
make
the best Daisy players in the world, and they are the only recorders to
have
speaking record level controls, and I do own a PTR1. I certainly
wouldn't
choose either though as a location recorder, because of their size and
the
quality is not up to the Edirol, that was my main point. But the PTR1
and

2
are great players/recorders, if a little expensive. They also don't
have
built in stereo mics, as do the Edirols, so don't lend themselves to
immediate and fast sound capture in a wireless fashion. I love the
fact
with the Edirol that I can take it out of my pocket, much like a
sighted
person does a camera, and immediate be recording in about five seconds.

Steve, to be fair to me, I don't think I exactly said the PTr2 was a
replacement for the R1, simply the nearest thing to it in terms of a
card
recorder, although of course it has the CD recording facility too.
Yes,
the
PTR2 is larger but does have the advantage, as far as some are
concerned,
of
being able to record to CD and act as a CD drive when attatched to a
computer.

It is accessible too, although the early models did have anoying and
unnecessary prompts. There shouldn't be any guess work when uisng the
PTR2.
I hope you aren't going to come back and display dismissiveness about
acfcessability in this context because I'm sure many find the PTR2
quite
a
good deal over most if not all portable recorders for knowing what's
going
on.For what it does it doesn't seem to carry a rediculous premium for
this
accessability factor.

Hi Ray,
To say the PTR2 matches the Edirol in any way is pure silliness. The
PTR
can't record in straight wave, it has too many moving parts, and is
just
too
darned bulky. Good for recording Daisy, but I wouldn't use it for
location
recording. The appeal of the Edirol is that you can just pull it out
of
your pocket, and capture sound. There are very few devices that let
you
capture sound with reasonable quality, without having wires everywhere.
