Hi Catherine!

If there are controls on the You Tube page for the fast forward etc they are not visible to JFW, However as far as I can see the file does not download to your pc rather flash allows you to access the clip from their site. Perhaps there is a programme which may aallow you to record the clip as it plays? if this were possible you could then manipulate the speed and sound etc, but not sure if this is possible even for sighted users, good luck!

Hi Alistair,

Thanks for the info. I was just trying to listen to something someone sent me a link for. When I got there it started playing automatically but the volume was very low. I think this may be because someone else was using my computer before, and maybe they turned the volume down in youtube and my computer has remembered this. Do you know a way of adjusting the youtube volume with JAWS? Also, do you know if/how to pause, rewind and fast forward using the keyboard/JAWS?

Hi Catherine,

I use You tube quite a lot just for a bit of fun. First thing to ensure is that you have adobe flash installed, if you don't have it then you will be prompted to install it, any problems doing it then let me know. When you find the search field to enter your search text and enter forms mode the normal screen reader action is to press tab to get to the search now button, all I can say is that for jfw 4.51 this does not work so after I enter the search text I simply come out of forms mode and curser to the search button and press enter. As the site uses flash navigation is basic but you can usually get listen to what you want, If your search brings up a number of results and you wish to listen to one or more simply press the backspace key on your pc to stop the current video and go back to your list of results, there is no doubt it is a bit fiddly but you get there in the end. Each result from your search will bring up a series of buttons, e.g. the name of the file, who submitted it, when it was submitted and a number of other aspects related to the file which provides more info on the video itself. Just have a play with it you will be fine! Good luck!

Alistair

Hi,

Ok I know youtube is difficult to use with a screen reader, but do any of you do it? If so, any tips?

Catherine
