Hi Steve and Trace et al,
We have the latest Id-mate Galaxy and our experience is that it does a
pretty damn good job. Ok, if the bar code info isn't in it's data bass then
you get an "item not found" but with lots of
brands the info is there and mostly not just the name of the product but
additional info as well, sometimes quite scarey e.g. when you see what's in
those cheesie biscuits, smile.
Also if you get the "item not found" message you can record your own
description. Once recorded when the Galaxy comes across the same bar code
again, the product info is played. Our local co-ops bar codes never work
but now that we're building up the database, it gets easier.
It's not perfect and when necessary we resort to tap tap see.
I think it's worth the money and worth the effort of building your own
database.

what exactly are you looking to do?

i have a very old i d mate its a very clunky thing with a control box and
the scanner attached via a cable, its very old and takes forever to identify
any barcodes i scan, i can't scan purchjased groceries in it unless i've
done it manually.
i believe that the newer ones have their own database of items that can be
identified just by scanning the item when you've purchased it and don't have
to manually enter the details for the item first
does anyone know what i'm talking about and if so can they point me in the
direction of where to go from here
