There are tools that allow you to do this, although how valuable they are
really will depend on what you feed into them and what you want them for.
The analasys of audio is notoriously complex and whilst some of these bits
of software do a remarkeable job of pitch tracking they are still likely to
have problems here and there. A lot of it seems to be aimed at getting
tunes onto mobile phones that play MIDI.

I've tried one package which as I say does a remarkable job, but the
material you put in will almost certainly need to be edited. The real
difficulty is that most of what people want to convert is not just a solo
instrument like a piano or a flute, the former being especially suited. In
most cases it will be kids trying to get mobile versions of their farourite
pop tune. The issue here is that most even these are multi-track
masterpeices and the resulting MIDI file piles all of what it "hears" into
that one MIDI file including any vocal work (if any these days).

Basically I think that whilst this is an interesting tool, you'll probably
still be buying ring tones unless you are a musician familiar with MIDI in
which case you can make a much better job of it yourself as you know what
should land on which MIDI channel.

Hi,

This is talking from going to MP3 to Midi format, not the other way
round.

Thanks.
Andrew.

Hi Andrew,

Yes, you can just set the recording output to What You Hear, and record
the output from the sound card using Sound Forge, Total Recorder, or any
of those. Play the MIDI back in Winamp, and record it using Sound
Forge, or one of the others mentioned.

Another way you might be able to do it, though I have never tried it
yet, is to use Winamp's own Wave Writer plugin. This records any output
from Winamp directly to a WAV file. Then you can convert the Wav to an
MP3.

All the best

Hi Steve,

Ok, how exactly would this work - are you saying that the sound
card when I play an MP3 or other audio is transmitting data to the midi
port? If so, what is the success of doing such an operation (i.e, have
you tried it)?

Thanks.
Andrew.

Hi Andrew,

What about using a sound recorder, such as Total Recorder, or
Sound Forge, to record the output from the MIDI port on the sound card,
then save it as MP3? That would certainly do it.

Hi,

There may be some way of doing it, but MIDI and MP3/Wave
data are very different - MIDI data being data that MIDI software reads
and plays it through the MIDI output system, whereas MP3/Wav is just
pure sound data.

If there is any software that does this, which I doubt,
it would have to be quite expensive, quite technical and possibly won't
give you what you want.

Let me know if you find anything as I would be
interested to hear results.

Thanks.
Andrew.

Hi ya all, It happens to be my first posting on this
mailing list and I hope that it will certainly be a great learning
experience from lot of senior experts in this field of adoptic
technology which brings me to my question on hand and that is, there
anyway to convert mp3/wave to midi format? if yes, How can it be done?
Much appreciation for your time...
