Hi Andrew,
Perhaps I didn't express myself clearly enough yesterday, I cannot import
the files using the wizzard because it only gives me choice of importing
from a comunication program: ms exchange, ms messenger, 2 flavours of
Outlook express, Eudora and netscape comunicator.
I copied the files in an ordinary folder I created on my local C drive.
I have now deleted the second identity from my system but in my documents
and settings there are still 3 of them listed, one with nothing in it,
another with my current folders in it and one with those, plus the folders I
can't get access to.
What should be my next move? I use those files as reference, I'd like to get
at them if possible
Is my only option to save them to a cd?
I think part of the problem might be that when I first found them and tried
to open them, Windows asked me what program it should use to open them, I
chose Outlook express of course but perhaps not the right part of that
program as there was a long list of subprogram to choose from.
Any comments appreciated but please, don't lose any sleep over it,
especially to-night!
Hope you end this year and start the new one well.
Thanks for your help.
Marie.
Why are you using these identities anyway? They are a real cludge.
Andrew.

Hi Andrew, I created a folder on local disk C I called my o e folder. I copied one of the folders I found in my documents and settings on the backup identity I found there. I opened Outlook express and tried to import the folder in my identity but was only given the choice to import from mail or messenger programmes. I chose o e 6 and was only given the choice of 2 locations: the 2 identities present on my pc. What did I do wrong? what should I do next? or instead? Your help much appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Hi,
Try this:
1. Copy those files to a location you can get at easily (they will be .dbx and .cdx files). 2. Use the import wizard in OE to import those CDX and DBX into your current identity.
Once the files are imported they will be compacted and new files will be created. You can then get rid of the old files.
I sometimes recommend that OE users backup the CDX/DBX files by going into the tools | options menu, then in the system somewhere there is a tab dealing with file management, you can then open the directory specified in the dialog box and copy the files to a safe location, which can be easily imported if something goes wrong through the day to day use of the program. We have had to revert to these backups more than once.
Sorry for being vague about locations; I am not an OE user really.
Andrew.

On Christmas eve as I was about to shut down, got the message from o.e. it was going to compact files to free up disk space, I listened to the progress bar and shut down when I thought the process was complete. When I got back to the program the following day, I found with horror that all my subfolders in my inbox where I save all the tips and tricks I glean from this and other lists had disappeared. I counted myself lucky, my addressbook was still there. Since then I've searched for the folders of course and have just discovered that they are stored in a seperate identity in my documents and settings. This folder seems to be a backup of my own inbox as well. I've tried to move my old folders back to my own identity but can't find
where exactly to put them. If I switch identity in o.e. I am only given the choice of 2 of them, not 3 as there are in my documents and settings. Would love to access those files again, especially now I KNOW they are still on my machine, can anyone tell me how to do it? If I try to open them from Windows explorer, o.e. opens and presents me with my inbox but the old folders are not there to read.
Thanks in advance
Marie
