no, I hadn't, but I would need an external one, as I have one of those small
flat computers, that only has 1 drive bay, which is already taken with my DVD
writer.

Have you considered the professional tape back up systems? I think they are
still made, Seagate were a major manufacturer one model being the Barracuda.
Expensive but not so expensive as losing a valuable collection. A little like a
large cassette and the unit went into the front of your tower as does the DVD
Rom. Tapes took somewhere in the range of 20/40 gigs of data but maybe they're
even bigger now. A Google should give details.

I first thought about using zip disks, as then they could easily be
re-used, unfortunately, the ones I have seen only take 750MB, so to backup
something like 400 to 450GB on zip disks would require around 540 disks for one
backup, which is why I decided on DVD disks, as I want to make at least 3
backups, possibly 4, which would be around 2200 750MB zip disks.

The only problem with this approach, is that you are putting all your
eggs in one basket. If that nice cheap hard disk fails, and they do, you'll
lose the whole darned lot. Whereas, if a single DVD gets corrupted, you'd only
lose a small amount of your backups. So I am with Simon here, in that you are
best to archive onto DVD. I wouldn't use DVD for regular backups, but for what
Simon wants to do, I think they are the best solution.

hello list,
does anyone know of anywhere where I can purchase large quantities of
blank dvd disks, preferably the duel layer 8GB type at a reasonable price?
I am looking to purchase a minimum of 200 disks at a time, possibly
more, as I will be using them to make several backups of my audio/video
archive, which is well over 400GB at the moment.
would prefer to purchase them from with in the UK if possible.
