Hi Andrew.

These machines will only scan in to a text format and then read out using 
synthetic speech, this can also be achieved without having the bother of 
scanning by buying the books electronically as I've indicated in my mail.  
Perhaps you could email me off list with the books you want to read, I could 
find out whether they are available in IBooks on my iphone and let you know of 
the cost.  Do you own any apple ddevices at the moment such as an Ipod Touch?
