Graham, the only thing I can come up with is a cordless, or wireless as they seem to call them these days, keyboard. I use one when it becomes difficult to sit at the computer and it does the job for me. There are quite a few inexpensive ones around these days which would do what you want without you having to sit at the PC or have a cord trailing across your room.
