I met the CEO of a company late last year that is doing 3d printing of
continuous fiber composites (http://www.mantiscomposites.com/index.html). I
think they're doing either PEEK or Ultem matrix with continuous carbon
fiber. Their printer is 5DOF to enable fiber placement in structurally
optimized orientations. I think they have software to help with optimizing
fiber orientations, and to help estimate performance of the completed
parts. I haven't personally used them for any parts yet, but am hoping to
try them out sometime this year.

They can be useful, and as launch costs come down it will make sense to
use techniques like this but it isn't going to eliminate directional CFRP
in the big important structures or be used to make COPV's in one shot. It
might be a neat way to make a COPV liner, however.

They could mold out large chunks of structure with high strength from
what the article implies. Of course they will have to prove out the
strength of the material.
