Rocket engines will be only a small part of the economic activity that
takes place in outer space. You may want to think broadly about what
really drives your interest. If you were working on asteroid mining robots
would that interest you as much even though it's not rockets specifically?
As for what you can do now, the advice is simple: build something. Build a
backyard catapult, or a lego robot that can bring you a soda, or anything
really that interfaces with the physical world and isn't purely digital.
