Thinking about this further, I suspect the number of volunteers that would step
forward knowing full well of the potential implications of such a mission in
terms of exposure, would be surprising. Especially if just the arrival at the
proposed destination was survivable for a relatively short period and
scientific and social progress was a result. There's a term for this behavior
that escapes me right now. :-)

Proposed solution was the same for nuclear bomber crews initially. Keep them
beyond reproductive age. A lot older. Multi-generational crews would come later
with bigger and better systems. Besides, pure controlled fusion was only 30
years away, same as it is today.
