Agreed:
After casting the bates grains, I would put the whole propellant stack under
compression inside the casing, avoiding the need for separate tubes for liner
and casting.
To give credit where it is due I learned the trick from Ron Urinsco, who flew
any number of 6 inch motors this way.
If I remember correctly, Urinsco put a small O-ring of some kind between the
compressed bates grains. Personally I just smeared a little RTV around. (tape
and RTV are the magic which makes rockets fly! :-)
