wouldn't surrounding optical fibers with a fluid matching the refractive
index etc of the fiber nullify the fiber's light guiding characteristics?
Seems like the effectiveness of the fiber is all about guiding the light
down the fiber and amplifying it as it goes.... in other words, getting the
energy in but not letting it out except at the end.
