Perhaps the outside of the fiber is coated like a stacked dielectric,i.e.
wavelength specific to the laser output but transparent to the pump diode
wavelenth.

Seems like the effectiveness of the fiber is all about guiding the light
down the fiber and amplifying it as it goes.... in other words, getting the
energy in but not letting it out except at the end.
