In an earlier article it explained that the original concept was to drop a stage mid run
reducing weight and the need for a third set of motors but motor technology advanced
past the motor they were going to use and the new motors they are now going to use
can do it on a single burn but because the could not make any radical changes to the
rockets because the present shape was developed around the F15 they just
left the motors up front.

Oddities: any idea why that air launched rocket (concept animation above)
briefly deployed a bag aft, after release and why its 4 motor exhausts were
mounted on the top (early Goddard style)?
