High-voltage transmission unfortunately is a poor fit to solar arrays,
Sorry, should have made the context clear. This is for a thermal type
generation where the generator output is around 20 kV before step up
and the transmitter is a km or two away. Everything would have to be
pressurized. The Siemens lines are filled with high-pressure nitrogen
and SF6.
You can get some mass reduction by using sodium in aluminum pipes as
the conductor.
