BCBC birders participated in the 5th year of the Buchanan County Christmas Bird Count on December 22. The count was short-handed this year with only 8 participants who had to deal with pouring rain until the afternoon. Forty-three species were counted with 850 birds sighted. New species counted for the first time this year were a Pied-billed Grebe found by David Raines and 14 American Pipits found by Don Carrier, Roger Mayhorn and Daryl Owens on Compton Mt. Some of the species found in past years but missed this year were Turkey Vulture, American Kestrel,Eastern Screech Owl,Eastern Phoebe,Brown Creeper,Field Sparrow and Pine Siskin.
