Members of the Buchanan County Bird Club birded the Breaks Interstate Park on Saturday, October 8. The morning started out cool, but the temperature soon reached a comfortable level for an enjoyable day. We logged 45 species for the day. We were glad to have our good friend and co-founder of the BCBC, Ed Talbott III, back birding with us. The highlights of the day were several hawk species, Yellow-billed Cuckoos, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, both White-eyed and Blue-headed Vireos, the first of the season Winter Wrens, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Veery, Swainson's and Wood Thrush, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Scarlet Tanagers, and White-throated Sparrows. After birding the morning we found some picnic tables surrounded by colorful fall foliage and had a leisurely picnic lunch. The day's complete birding list is below, and more photos of the day can be found at http://www.pbase.com/mayhorn/breaks_park_10_2011 Roger Mayhorn Compton Mt 45 species Wood Duck 4 Wild Turkey 8 Turkey Vulture 10 Osprey 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk 2 Red-shouldered Hawk 1 Red-tailed Hawk 2 Mourning Dove 2 Chimney Swift 5 Yellow-billed Cuckoo 2 Red-bellied Woodpecker 2 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 1 Downy Woodpecker 1 Hairy Woodpecker 1 Northern Flicker 9 Pileated Woodpecker 2 Eastern Phoebe 3 White-eyed Vireo 1 Blue-headed Vireo 2 Blue Jay 12 (1 carrying food) American Crow 5 Carolina Chickadee 6 Tufted Titmouse 2 White-breasted Nuthatch 3 Carolina Wren 2 Winter Wren 2 Golden-crowned Kinglet 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Eastern Bluebird 1 Veery 1 Swainson's Thrush 1 Wood Thrush 1 American Robin 12 Gray Catbird 5 Brown Thrasher 1 Cedar Waxwing 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler 5 Scarlet Tanager 3 Eastern Towhee 2 Chipping Sparrow 1 Song Sparrow 2 White-throated Sparrow 5 Northern Cardinal 4 Baltimore Oriole 1 American Goldfinch 1
