When I first got up this morning a COOPER'S HAWK was standing in the yard near
the bird feeder. It ran around the yard like a chicken, attempting to flush
some birds from the bushes. It finally flushed one, but it was on the opposite
side of the bush and it got away. After a few more minutes the hawk left,
looking rather frustrated.

Awhile after the hawk left the birds were busy in the yard and especially in
our stream. Some WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS are still hanging around. The adults
with their clean look and white head stripes remind me of some fellow all
dressed up to go out to dinner. Two ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS came to the feeder
and the stream. The male's feathers looked a little worn. He should have a
whole set of bright new ones when he comes back by in the spring. A small
flock of CEDAR WAXWINGS gathered in the stream. Their colors blended well with
the fallen leaves. They look like someone has painted them with pastel colors.
Here are three photos.
