I had the pleasure of birding with Frank Simms of San Jose, Costa Rica on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We were joined by Richard Kretz on Friday and Saturday. Frank has been staying with Fred Alsop since Oct. 8th and is leaving Oct. 31st, so I was very pleased to host him for a few days. We met on my 3 trips to his country. On Thursday we birded the Clifton area of Russell County. The birding was not great but Frank took lots of pictures. We did get 4 kestrels, 2 Loggerhead Shrikes (lifer for Frank), 2 Kingfishers and lots of Song and White-throated Sparrows. Friday we birded the Garden Hole and rest of Breaks Interstate Park. Had a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and lots of Carolina Chickadees and Tufted Titmice. We went to Beaver Knob in Kentucky for some fast moving sparrows and Yellow-rumped Warblers. Had lunch in the park and dinner was steaks at Richard and Pam's home. Saturday we went to Burkes Garden for birding, photos and lunch. We went out the south end of the garden where they got some great photos of a button buck Deer, into Bland County then into Poor Valley and Roaring Fork. In Tannersville in Tazewell County we had a flock of 41 Wild Turkeys. On Beartown Mountain we found 2 Ruffed Grouse, the male was fully fanned and fluffed, showing off for the hen. Again the guys got some great photos. I am sure Richard will be putting some of the photos on his web site. Had to part with Frank on Sunday since other people wanted him to visit them. It was a fabulous three days of fellowship and birding. Dave Worley Rosedale, Va.
