Folks, Inspired by raptor perches used along field edges in Germany, I recently erected three along the fence lines around our yard. Yesterday afternoon a Sharp-Shinned Hawk swooped in low over an adjacent field to perch briefly on one before launching an attack on some feeding Goldfinches. She returned about dusk last night and again this morning. Although not completed until late September, our water feature, inclusive of a small pond and stream, is attracting some good birds. At the tail end of the Fall migration we enjoyed visits from Tennessee, Cape May, and Palm Warblers, as well as Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks and Indigo Buntings to it. Yesterday we had a FOS Ruby-Crowned Kinglet and several Slate-Colored Juncos visiting. We're also seeing Red-Headed Woodpeckers and Y-B Sapsuckers on a fairly regular basis. This morning awoke to noisy Common Grackles in the yard along with a flock of approx. ten Purple Finches that alternately monopolized a feeder and bathed in the stream. Enjoy the birds....
