Hi All,
Annie and I made our yearly spring trip to the North Coast this past weekend.
Cold and wet on Saturday and Sunday was cold but as always Magee Marsh and
surrounding areas was a flutter with birds. The highlight this year was the
Curlew Sandpiper found east of Toledo. The Eastern Whip per Will perched in
the open within arms reach was a treat. With Saturday's rain and Sunday's
forecast I was expecting the warblers to be staging for a crossing Sunday night
and I was not disappointed the warblers were stacked and dripping off of the
trees preparing for a night crossing of the great lake. Seeing the warblers at
arms length without binoculars puts me in awe at the distance these birds
travel twice a year. Without the binoculars the tininess of the Northern
Parula was apparent fluttering among the branches. The huskiness of the
Blackpoll if you can use the word huskiness when speaking of a warbler was also
evident. I guess the extra muscle helps them make their transatlantic flight
each fall. We finished the weekend with a bunch of birds on our list, one life
bird each (Curlew Sandpiper) 25 warbler species, renewed with loads of aahs and
wows.
Great spring birding to you!
